Seal sighting on the the Jurassic Coast thrills students
A SEAL has become an unlikely companion for school students who were coasteering along the Jurassic Coast.
Some 120 students and teachers from the Swanage School went coasteering and climbing for free with Land & Wave, a Dorset based outdoor education provider.
During the activities, the group spotted an eight foot long grey seal swimming just a few metres away from them.
Owen Senior, who is managing director of Land & Wave, said: “This is the first year ever that we’ve seen a grey seal along this stretch of the Jurassic Coast.
“There has been a rare sighting of a loggerhead turtle near Portland Bill and we are often greeted by dolphins swimming down the same stretch of coastline but a seal was a very rare sight indeed.”
Mr Senior said: “The seal then left the rocks and popped its head out of the gauntlet plunge pool nearby where some of the children were playing.
“The children were thrilled and described the sighting as their ‘highlight of the day’ and we were very happy to give the students a first week of school they will never forget.”
The coasteering activities were part of the company's drive to provide quality outdoor education and adventure supporting the local community.
Tristram Hobson, Swanage School head teacher, said the students thoroughly enjoyed their trip and thanked Land & Wave for the opportunity.
He said the new school, which opened this month, had also been inundated with community support.
Rise of infrequent visitors
LAND & Wave marine biologist Katie Spillman, pictured, said: “The superb water quality, and increase in ocean productivity are probably reasons for this rare sighting.
“We have seen an unusual increase in animals that are infrequent visitors to Dorset this year.
“For example the amount of dolphins seen by our kayak tours is very high and a loggerhead turtle was sighted just of Portland Bill two weeks ago.”
