Rolling out the barrel for charity
FUNDRAISERS were on a roll for charity as they took part in a challenge that began on Dartmoor and ended on Weymouth harbourside.
The fourth Dartmoor Barrel Challenge proved to be a huge success as teams carried beer barrels across the misty moor before rolling them across the finish line outside the King’s Arms.
Around £4,000 has been raised for MV Freedom, a Weymouth boat for the disabled, and Help for Heroes – with more funds yet to be counted.
No transport was allowed so the barrel had to be carried or rolled for 15 and a half miles across the moor, before teams drove back to Weymouth where they had to roll their barrel on the final leg from The Old Rooms to the King’s Arms.
MV Freedom crewmember Nina Blondeau said: “The rain didn’t dampen our spirits and a great day was had by all.
“Five teams came back to Weymouth to complete the challenge.
“South Dorset MP Richard Drax came along and judged the winner for us.
“It’s not just who is fastest rolling the barrel but there are also points for appearance and style.”
She thanked King’s Arm landlord Pete Whittle for providing the catering and the judging panel, which included South Dorset MP Richard Drax.
The judges decided that The Barron Knights should take away the trophy for best barrel rollers’ outfit, which saw the team carry out the challenge dressed as knights on horseback, and best mode of transport.
Team Jolly Got Rogered were the first to cross the finish line.
During the day MV Freedom was moored up outside the King’s Arms for people to go on board and have a look around.
The party continued into the night at the King’s Arms where there was music from Sheryl Lee.
There was also a children’s tombola and raffle, with prizes from local businesses.
The idea of the challenge, which like all good ideas was first dreamt up in a pub, is to get an empty beer barrel back from Dartmoor to Weymouth.
The challenge is one of the main events in the fundraising calendar for MV Freedom, the Weymouth boat which gives disabled people and others the chance to experience the sea.
