Duo armed with bats and hammer raid shop on Lodmoor Hill
ROBBERS armed with bats and a hammer raided a Weymouth bookies.
The two men demanded cash after threatening staff at the Coral shop in the Lodmoor Hill area last night.
They stole a total of £815 before fleeing from the scene.
Detectives are urging any witnesses to come forward following the incident which happened at 8pm.
“Whilst they were there they stole £815 in cash from staff before making off from the scene.
“Detectives from Weymouth CID are keen to speak to any witnesses in and around the local area who may have seen persons acting suspiciously in the area or running nearby at this time.”
A spokesman for Coral said that police were handling the robbery investigation and urged witnesses and anyone with information to contact the force.
Officers rushed to the scene and spent time speaking to local traders in the area.
A resident, who did not wish to be named, said: “It is an awful thing to happen.
“Let us hope they catch whoever did this.”
No one was injured during the robbery and the Coral shop was open for business yesterday.
He added: “I urge residents who think they might have seen something suspicious to contact the police.
“These incidents never used to happen in our area but today it seems they occur more and more.”
Geoff Petherick, spokesman for community safety for Weymouth and Portland Borough Council, said: “There seem to be more problems like this in our area in recent times.
“I am working with police to target these issues and let us hope they find whoever did this.
“It really is disappointing to hear that it has happened.”
