A35 weekend closure for roadworks
1:35pm Tuesday 24th September 2013 in News
The Bakers Arms roundabout on the A35 will be closed for a full weekend in October for major roadworks.
The closure will take place from 7pm on Friday, October 4 until 6am on Monday, October 7. A fully signed diversion route will be in operation.
During the works, construction crews from Dorset County Council will remove all the layers of the carriageway to a depth of 30 cm and replace with modern materials.
The roundabout will also be completely rebuilt and its drainage improved to address flooding problems.
To minimise inconvenience the work will be carried out by crews working triple shifts over a single weekend, avoiding a longer contract period involving work during daylight hours through the week.
Essential utility works by Wessex Water and SSE will also be carried out at the site over the same period.
Hilary Cox, Dorset County Council's Cabinet member for environment, said: "We have given careful consideration on how to manage traffic flows during this project.
"The decision to close for a whole weekend took into account many factors including traffic levels, commuters, school buses and local businesses.
" We recognise that this closure will cause some difficulties for people locally. But the road surface is in a bad way and will not survive another winter.
"During the weekend the team will remove and replace more than 2,800 tonnes of material, with all the old material being recycled for use in other projects.
"This is an extremely busy roundabout. By doing this now we will protect the carriageway for at least the next 20 years."
The diversion route from the east of the county: use the A35 to A350 junction, then follow the A350 to the A31 roundabout then take the A31 to Bere Regis. To Wareham/ Swanage from Bere Regis traffic will be able to use the A35 to Morden Park Corner and use the B3075.
From the west of the county : take the A31 to A350 junction, then follow the A350 to the A35 junction and join the A35. To Wareham/ Swanage from Bere Regis traffic will be able to use the A35 to Morden Park Corner and use B3075.
There is also the chain ferry that can be taken from Swanage to Sandbanks.
Fred Drane, Dorset County Councillor for Lytchett, said: "I have raised local concerns about the impact and timing of these works but, having spoken to the officers in charge of the project, I am confident it has been planned in the best, most practical way possible.
I am particularly pleased the Wessex Water and SSE works are taking place at the same time to avoid future disruption.
"It is best to get this work completed as quickly as possible. There will be delays for motorists over that weekend, so I would urge people to plan their route and allow more time for their journeys."
