Manager from Weymouth taking on challenge with trek up Mount Kilimanjaro
A MANAGER from Weymouth is taking on a challenge of mountainous proportions as he treks up the world’s highest free-standing peak.
Darren Wood joined three colleagues from Saint-Gobain PAM UK to climb Kilimanjaro in Africa.
The firm is based at Stanton-by-Dale near Ilkeston, Derby, but general manager Mr Wood, 47, lives in Weymouth.
Sales director John Wilson, of Long Eaton, Nottingham, also taking on the climb, said: “We started hill-walking as a group and we enjoyed it so much that we decided it would be great to do something a little more challenging.”
Money will be raised for Water Aid, because of Saint-Gobain PAM UK’s links with the water industry, Help for Heroes, because Mr Wood was in the armed forces, and Breast Cancer Care and Macmillan Cancer Support because they all know somebody who had suffered cancer and is being treated.
The team, which also includes head of technical sales Phil Green and national account manager Simon Bennett, were hoping to raise £15,000 for four charities, but they have already gathered £15,600 in sponsorship from relatives, friends, and business associates and £1,000 per head from the company. They now hope to raise £20,000 overall. As part of their training the team has climbed the highest peaks of England, Wales and Scotland – Scafell Pike, Snowdon and Ben Nevis.
They have also completed a number of treks across Dartmoor and the Brecon Beacons and a number of 10k runs to build up stamina. The team flew out to the Kenyan capital of Nairobi on September 19 and then moved to neighbouring Tanzania and started their seven-day trek on Saturday, aiming for a final ascent to the summit this Thursday.
After only a day’s acclimatisation, the trek will go via the less-travelled but longer Lemosho route up the world’s highest free-standing mountain in a bid to reach the 19,341 ft summit.
