NEW business owners in Dorchester’s South Street say they could not think of anywhere better to set up their shop.
Jim Ross recently opened Durnovaria wine bar and cafe in the old post office building previously occupied by Starbucks.
He said: “Dorchester is a developing town. I think it’s going to grow and it’s developing in the right location.”
Jim said he chose the ‘iconic’ building for his venture as it was in the heart of the town and he hopes to showcase the best of local wine, teas, coffees, cured meats and cheeses and cakes as well as books and artistic talent.
He said: “The most important thing about this project is that everything that we use is local and all very high quality.”
As well as running acoustic sessions on Sunday afternoons, Jim also plans to host producer nights, charity wine tasting evenings and anything that shows off local talents.
Wayne Metcalf is getting busy to open up Sidewalk Clothing Co at the bottom of South Street on October 3.
He said: “If you’re going to open up a business anywhere, Dorchester is probably the place to do it. It’s up and coming in a lot of ways.”
Wayne promises to offer urban clothing for younger people at his store and believes he has spotted a niche in the market.
He said: “There’s nowhere here for younger people to shop. I tried to go out clothes shopping and I couldn’t find anywhere so I thought there’s a niche there.
“It’s all young, trendy urban wear – things like hoodies, funky t-shirts and cords.”
Wayne will also be running an online store alongside the shop at sidewalkclothing.co.uk Steve Payne, Dawn Potter and Rosemary Wareham have also opened up another independent outlet in the high street in the form of The Pantry.
The cafe has been open around three weeks and Dawn admitted that their early trading had exceeded all expectations.
She said: “Rosemary and I have wanted to do this for a long time.
“We wanted it to have this buzz and make it a nice place to sit and relax in.”
