'Thank you' to Weymouth and Portland’s Olympic Ambassadors
‘THANK YOU’ is the message to Weymouth and Portland’s Olympic Ambassadors for their efforts during the summer Festival of Sport.
Members of the ambassador programme were treated to afternoon tea at Weymouth Pavilion as a thank you for their commitment during the Dorset Festival of Sport on Weymouth beach this summer.
Almost 40 ambassadors in total signed up for shifts over the 10-day festival celebrating the Olympic legacy from July 29 to August 5, eager to help and pass out information to the public.
Claire Pullinger, ambassador programme coordinator for Volunteer Centre Dorset, said as a result of the volunteering success this year the centre are now keen to spread the ambassador scheme across the county.
She added: “We want to ensure volunteering and local communities benefit from the influx of new volunteers as a result of the Olympic games.
“We’re working to develop new and exciting opportunities throughout Dorset for volunteers to be involved in, and to expand an ambassador programme and roll it out across the county.
“The great ambassador team makes taking the volunteering programme forward much easier, knowing that we have got such an outstanding group of people set to continue the legacy and volunteer.
“I cannot thank the ambassadors enough; they were a great team to work with and we have had some fantastic feedback.”
Marie Waterman, Volunteer Centre Dorset manager, said the centre is due a meeting with Weymouth and Portland Borough Council to discuss the expansion of volunteering plans.
She added: “We would like to spread the ambassador programme across Dorset, which would be the icing on the cake for volunteering.”
Weymouth and Portland Borough Council Social Inclusion spokesman Cllr Colin Huckle said: “It was great to have the ambassadors back; I want to thank them all for their time and effort during the 10 day event this year.
“We will be looking at ways in which we can enhance the volunteer programme for 2014 as part of our Olympic legacy.”
