BIDDERS will be on the case when a vintage piece of luggage goes up for auction in Dorchester next month.
A tan leather portmanteau designed by Paul Stark in Vienna in the early 20th century is expected to fetch up to £2,000 when is goes up for sale at Duke’s in Dorchester on October 15.
The item, which was extremely popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, is 51 inches high and 22 inches wide with a fitted interior.
Special compartments are designed o hold jewellery and smaller items of jewellery and smaller items of clothing while it also has fitted hangers for suits and dresses.
Deborah Doyle, vintage clothing specialist at Duke’s, said: “They really were like a home away from home while you were away on your travels, with all your holiday needs in one case.
“Portmanteaus in this condition are quite rare today. “It is very similar to those made by Louis Vuitton and Goyard who were some of the most famous manufacturers of these.
“They have become highly collectable for house furnishings – we have seen clients use them for storage for clothes and papers and even used as coffee tables turned on their side. “This one, with its original Paul Stark interior label, carries a pre- sale estimate of £1,000 – 2,000.”
