We often advertise our monthly Welfare Benefit Advice sessions in the Dorset Echo and parish magazines and they are always very well attended.
As we start to approach the winter season, pensioners especially start to feel the cold and where some have limited finances, it leaves them with a question of choosing between heating or food. A simple benefits check at one of our surgeries is easy and could possibly highlight that you are not receiving enough state benefit.
A lady attended a surgery recently and we conducted a benefits check. Her State Pension was below the appropriate rate for Pension Credit and she had no other income.
We were able to advise her that she should be receiving an extra £17 per week and helped advise her how to apply for the extra benefit. She could also backdate the claim for three months.
If you are eligible for Pension Credit this can also be a ‘passport’ to other benefits.
The Pension Credit rates per week, are £145.40 for a single person and £222.05 for a couple.
If you think your income could be below these rates or you just want to double check that you’re getting all you are entitled to, then phone for an appointment on 01305 269444.
