Writer praises hospital for life-enhancing hand surgery
A WEYMOUTH woman has thanked hospital staff for making her dream to become an author come true.
Mum-of-two Laura James has suffered with rheumatoid arthritis since she has been 18.
In recent years, the 46-year-old has undergone complicated hand surgery to repair tendons, install a replacement knuckle and even had a plate put in her left wrist.
She said: “It’s thanks to the staff at Dorset County Hospital that I could use my hands and pursue my dream to become a writer.
“Rheumatoid arthritis impacts my whole body, but especially my hands.
“It’s something that impacts my everyday life and sometimes I just can’t leave the house.”
The new author, who lives in Cornflower Close, is celebrating after recently been signed by independent publishing company Choc Lit.
They will publish her first novel Truth or Dare in October this year.
The novel, which is split into two parts with one being set in 1989, is based around the issue of how the past impacts the present day.
After taking time out from the competitive singing circuit to look after her sick mother, Mrs James added: “Having your first book published is a dream come true and I’m so happy to be singing again after a bit of a break.
“I’m yet to have further surgery on my hands, but I want Dorset County Hospital to know how very grateful I am for what they have done for me.
“I have been writing since I was a teenager and I have always dreamed of becoming an author.”
Mrs James, who lives with her husband Garry, daughter Eleanor, 13, and eight-year-old son Alex in the town where she has spent most of her life.
The talented mum is an Unsigned finalist, a competition won by Leona Lewis before the star went on to win the third series of The X Factor.
She has also taken part in The American Idol Experience, a component of the US TV program which showcases singing talent, with a judging panel led by Mariah Carey.
