UPDATE: Driver killed in Portland accident
12:40pm Monday 7th October 2013 in News
A YOUNG driver has been killed in a car accident on Portland.
The 24-year-old, named locally as Aidan Williams-Martin, died instantly after his car hit a wall on Southwell Road in the early hours of this morning.
The road between Easton and Southwell was closed for several hours as the scene was cleared and investigations carried out.
It is the 23rd fatality on Dorset's roads this year compared with 25 for the whole of 2012.
A resident, who did not want to be named, said the car crashed into the wall, knocking over the fence behind it and a signpost.
He said: “All the stones from the wall were scattered across the road at the caravan park.
The resident said he had heard the commotion during the night and saw police cordoning off the road.
“It seemed to take a long time for the police to clear everything away. The car had come to a stop in the trees between the caravan park and the wall.
“I suppose it was lucky that it did stop, or it could have hit one of the caravans.”
Weymouth and Portland Borough Councillor Margaret Leicester, who represents Tophill East, said: “It is just dreadful. It's so sad when you hear of someone dying so young, who hasn't had chance to really experience life yet.”
The accident will affect the whole of Portland's 'tight-knit' community, she added.
“It is horrible when it happens on your doorstep. Everyone knows one another here and I'm sure everyone will have some connection to the friends and relatives of this poor young man.”
Coun Leicester said: “This is a fast, clear road with no houses along it and people do tend to speed. Hopefully that is not what was happening here.”
Dorset Police are urging any witnesses to the crash to contact PC Vivian Bedford, of the Poole Traffic Department, on 101.
A spokeswoman said: “At 2am a fatal road traffic collision occurred on Southwell Road, Portland, at the junction with Weston Street.
“A brown Volkswagen Golf being driven by a 24-year-old man from the Portland area collided with a wall. The driver suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene.
“At this time it is not thought any other vehicles were involved.”
Dorset Fire and Rescue Service were also called to attend the incident.
A spokeswoman said: “We received a call at just after 2am reporting an accident on Southwell Road, Portland.
“Two fire engines attended.”
Aidan's family were too upset to comment.
