Get back to nature with Dorset Wildlife Trust's photo competition
CHILDREN are encouraged to get back to nature for a digital photography competition run by the Dorset Wildlife Trust.
The contest was created by Ken Dolbear in loving memory of his wife Pat.
The Pat Dolbear Photographic Award competition aims to get young people to take a close look at local wildlife, particularly mini beasts and insects.
It is open to anyone under 18 who has taken a wildlife picture on their phone or camera in Dorset.
Joy Wallis, pictured, community conservation officer for the Dorset Wildlife Trust, said: “Using a camera or mobile to record anything unusual in the garden, school grounds or when exploring the countryside is a wonderful way to encourage children to really look for what they can find around them.
“We are really grateful to Ken Dolbear for his continued sponsorship of this competition and some excellent wildlife spotting has been recorded as a result.”
Each month the panel of judges picks the best images, taking into account photographic quality, rarity of the wildlife and creativity.
Prizes of up to £25 in Amazon vouchers are awarded to one or more young photographers who have proved their photographic talent to the judges.
Previous competition winners include nine-year-old James Jeffries with his photograph of a heron and Felix Littlechild, 14, with his photo of a hawkmoth.
The Dorset Wildlife Trust added that now is a great time to submit wildlife snaps from the summer holidays, or images of summer changing into autumn.
To enter the Pat Dolbear Photographic Award, send photos to photocomp @dorsetwildlifetrust.org.uk including your name, age and details of when and where the photo was taken.
Winners will be notified by email and all the entries can be seen at flickr. com/groups/ pdaward/pool/ The Dorset Wildlife Trust’s ‘Wildlife on Your Doorstep’ scheme gives children an easy way to identify and record wildlife from their garden and areas near their homes.
