COASTGUARD REPORT: A stricken yacht, kitesurfer in trouble and a suspicious canister
7:45am Wednesday 9th October 2013 in News
Portland Coastguards have spent the morning keeping a watch on a stricken boat.
The yacht made contact with the Maritime Rescue and Co-ordination Centre on Weymouth harbourside at around 5.30am today to report they had engine failure and rudder problems.
The crew managed to make a temporary rudder repair and coastguards have been monitoring their progress as they sail across to Portland from St Alban’s Head.
Yesterday afternoon coastguards received a 999 call reporting a kitesurfer in difficulties in Portland Harbour.
Coastguards sent out a broadcast for vessels in the area to assist and shortly afterwards the kitesurfer was picked up by a RIB craft and brought back to shore safely.
Later in the afternoon coastguards received a call reporting a canister washed up on the beach at Burton Freshwater, near Bridport.
Dorset Fire and Rescue Service and West Bay coastguards went to investigate and found it to contain organic pesticide.
The firefighters arranged for it to be removed.
