Free overnight parking in Weymouth to start on November 1
2:12pm Thursday 17th October 2013 in News
MOTORISTS will soon be able to park for free at night in most car parks in Weymouth and Portland.
The decision was agreed by councillors in the summer and comes as part of a parking overhaul in the borough.
Free overnight parking will help to boost the economy, the council says.
From November 1, people can park for free in most council-run pay and display car parks everyday from 6pm until 9.30am.
The concession will not apply to on-street pay and display parking.
Free overnight parking was trialled last year and proved to be a success.
The concession is being advertised as a temporary measure until a formal change in parking charges can be introduced from next April. From April 1, the overnight concession will become permanent.
Council transport spokesman Christine James said: “This should help to give the town’s night time economy a boost and is the first of a number changes we want to make in order to modernise parking in the borough.”
