Movie star Tom Hanks set for Weymouth panto... or is he?
Is Hollywood superstar Tom Hanks in line to give Weymouth pantomime a star-studded twist?
Oh yes he is! Actually, oh no he probably isn’t.
The 57-year-old actor said in an interview that he would ‘love to star’ one year during the annual Weymouth pantomime.
The movie star made the comment after a fan tweeted the ITN entertainment news programme asking whether he would consider starring as Captain Hook in the Weymouth panto.
He laughed before adding: “Yes, sure I would. Who cares – where it is? Captain Hook? I’m in.”
The interviewer told him Weymouth was by the sea and it would be a lovely spot to spend some time.
Despite this year’s panto being Cinderella, organisers said they would happily welcome the A-lister as Captain Hook.
Nina Thompson, director of the Weymouth pantomime under Ron Martin management, said: “It would be a great honour if Tom Hanks would play in the Weymouth pantomime.
“We certainly wouldn’t refuse him for any role he wanted to play, and if Captain Hook would be his favourite role to play then so be it.”
Tom Hanks stars in new film Captain Philips – a biographical story of mariner Captain Phillips who is taken hostage by pirates in the Indian Ocean, during the Maersk Alabama hijacking in 2009.
The new film was released on October 11 and had its premiere at the 2013 New York Film Festival.
Pavilion operator Phil Say said: “If Tom Hanks says that he will play Captain Hook in the Weymouth pantomime I would quite happily make sure the 2014 or 2015 pantomime will be Captain Hook just for him.”
Stars that have previously graced the Weymouth pantomime stage include Steps member Lee Latchford-Evans, Boyzone singer Keith Duffy, Neighbours star Anne Charleston, Dieter Brummer from Home and Away, glamour model Maria Whittaker and Paul ‘Bubble’ Ferguson from Big Brother.
