Shire Hall renamed
10:17am Monday 28th October 2013 in News
SHIRE HALL could be re-named the ‘Dorchester Dungeons’ as part of a multi-million pound makeover.
The building, with its old crown Court and cells, is famous for being the venue of the Tolpuddle Martyrs trial, which took place in 1834.
It will be transformed in to a heritage centre if funding bids are successful.
At a West Dorset District Council meeting, councillors heard that names have been suggested for the project.
It has provisionally been agreed that it will be named after a quote from Tolpuddle martyr George Loveless, who called the cells ‘a miserable dungeon.’ Public consultation about what residents would like to see at the centre has now finished.
The project team will have its next meeting about the project in early December, councillors have been told. They are looking for anyone with stories about the old crown court and cells to tell their story by contacting the Shire Hall Oral History Project on 01305 252226, or emailing email@example.com
