FIREFIGHTERS tackled a chemical incident contained in a building on the Granby Industrial Estate.

Two fire crews from Weymouth were called to the scene at 6.30pm and remained on scene for two hours to ensure the property was safe.

Speaking at the scene, a Dorset Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We were called at 6.30pm to Tecan Ltd in Weymouth to fire alarms activating.

“On scene crews discovered some form of a chemical gas leak, where a tank was giving off chemical gas.

“Fire crews used gas tight suits and two sets of breathing apparatus to carry out reconnaissance and ventilation, and also set up a wet fire decontamination area at the scene.

"Firefighters suspected chemicals venting contained inside the building may have triggered the alarm.

“Fire crews remained on scene for two hours to ensure the property was safe and left the scene at approximately 8.30pm.”

A fire engine from Dorchester was called as back up for the Weymouth area during the incident.
