Learn all about new life-saving device

Dorset Echo: LIFESAVER: Fisherman Hugh Cox LIFESAVER: Fisherman Hugh Cox

PEOPLE are invited to find out more about a new device designed to save lives on land or at sea.

Fisherman Hugh Cox, will be unveiling a new case to fit over a Personal Locator Beacon in an event at Weymouth Angling Society today at 11am.

The idea is that if someone goes overboard, they can activate the device and it will transmit a unique code and GPS position to search and rescue satellites.

The launch event will see fishermen, who have pre-ordered the system, picking up their devices.

But members of the public are urged to go along to the launch to find out more about it. Mr Cox said that devices would be useful for other users of the Jurassic Coast including sailors, walkers or coasteerers.

The PLB and case has been called System JFR – System Jack, Farley, Robert – a tribute to the three men from the Weymouth fishing boat Purbeck Isle, who lost their lives in May 2012.

Following the tragedy, Mr Cox said he felt compelled to try and do something to help and teamed up with Aquatec to create the case.

Its only the case which is the new bit, the personal epirb's have been about for awhile now, so this article is a bit misleading. As whilst it is good that Mr.Cox has designed a case, he has not designed the first personal locators.

Agree. All it needs now is to wear a lifejacket at sea to go with it.
