TWO men have told of their shock after being injured when a sewage pipe fell onto a car in Weymouth.

The incident happened on Ranelagh Road, close to Weymouth train station at approximately 10.45am on Wednesday.

The road was closed for a short time for safety measures. The pipe damaged a black Fiat Punto.

The two men from Weymouth, 30-year-old Dean Disson and Romell Forde, 49, were walking by the sewage pipe when it collapsed.

They were left with slight injuries but say the situation ‘could have been much worse’.

Speaking at the scene a spokesperson for Dorset Police said: “We were called to an incident where a methane sewage vent pipe had collapsed and fallen on top of a car.

“A road closure on Ranelagh Road has been put in place as a precaution and will be re-opened once Wessex Water have attended and dealt with the sewage pipe.

“One vehicle was damaged as a result and one passer-by received very slight injuries and has now gone to Weymouth Community Hospital.”

Mr Disson said the incident was a ‘horrible experience’ and added: “I really feared for my life for a moment when I saw the pipe begin to fall.

“I was left with a cut on my face which left me feeling dazed and Romell was left with a cut on his leg.

“The police advised me to visit the immediate care unit at Weymouth Community Hospital because I also suffer with seizures.

“Something needs to be done about the pipe because it has been corroded for quite a while.

“It could have inflicted the same amount of damage on a person than it did to that car.

Mr Forde said Mtr Disson was left dazed and in shock.

He added: “I went with Dean to hospital to make sure he was OK. “If Dean was one foot to the right or left it doesn’t bear thinking about what could have happened.”

A Wessex Water spokeswoman said: “A sewage vent column had fallen during strong winds.“As soon as we were made aware of the incident we were on site to remove the column and make the area safe.
“We have spoken to Dorset Police and also personally visited one member of the public out of courtesy.
“While on scene we removed the damaged section of the pipe and are looking to go back in the New Year to remove it completely.
“The road was reopened quickly and we are looking into why this happened.”
