YOUNG people looking for a bit of direction are being invited to take the plunge and sign up to a personal development course.

Young adults in the Weymouth and Portland area have a chance to join in an exciting course which will see them helping in their community, going on an adventure weekend and doing some work experience.

At the same time, they will learn skills, work effectively with a team and boost their chances of getting into work or training.

Dorset Fire and Rescue Service is looking for young adults to take part in the Prince’s Trust programme in Weymouth in 2014. It comes as courses being run in Bridport and Dorchester come to and end, with proud youngsters making their final presentations to an invited audience. They were praised by Chief Fire Officer Darran Gunter.

The 12-week personal development programme gives 16-25 year olds the opportunity to undertake many different activities whilst they are working towards a nationally recognised award.

Prince’s Trust franchise manager Marie-Clare Nicholson said: “The course is aimed at helping to change the lives of these young people.

“It gives them something to aim for and a better chance within the workforce.

“In 2013 we have helped over 100 young people progress to university, employment, apprenticeships and living independently.

“We have also won a regional award for our community project work, which we are extremely proud of.”

Participants, who usually come from a variety of different backgrounds, will have the opportunity to spend a week away at a residential activity centre, undertake a project based in their local community, complete a work placement and participate in a team challenge, involving caring for others.

Marie-Clare Nicholson added: “We run courses throughout the year across Dorset, but we have two teams starting in early 2014 – Weymouth and Poole. Please have a look at the Prince Trust website or contact Sonya on 01305 753035 for more information.”
