HIGH winds and heavy rain are battering the Dorset coast.

This morning saw heavy rain and strong winds sweep across the county.

Flood warnings for West Bay Harbour and Lyme Regis Harbour are still in place from last night and there are flood alerts from Weymouth’s rivers and streams, as well as those in West Dorset and Purbeck.

Dorset Fire and Rescue Service is reminding motorists not to drive through flood water.

Condor Ferries has revised its 10am sailings to the Channel Islands due to the adverse conditions and these will now sail at 4pm.

The B3163 Dorset  is currently blocked both ways by Toller Whelme near Beaminster due to a fallen tree, as is the A35 Christchurch bypass, due to another fallen tree.

The Met Office has a yellow weather warning in place for both wind and rain across Dorset for this morning.

A spokesman said: “South to south-westerly gales and locally severe gales will affect western and southern parts of Wales and parts of southwest England during the early hours of Monday, moving east to affect English Channel coastal counties through this morning, whilst winds ease from the west later.

“The public should be aware of the risk of disruption to travel, particularly as the gales will be combined by heavy rain in some areas.”

Gusts of up to 60-70mph could be experienced, the Met Office said- especially at the coast or over high ground.

The spokesman added that the heavy rain could cause a risk of flooding.

He added: "Rainfall totals are expected to be widely 15-30 mm, but locally 50 mm over south facing hills.

"With ground already saturated over much of this region, the public should be aware of the risk of further localised flooding."
