THE coastguard helicopter from Portland has been scrambled to help in the search for a man who is believed to have fallen into a river in Dorset.

Portland Coastguard is co-ordinating the search for the man this evening which is centred around Iford Bridge, Christchurch.

The search was started around 7pm and teams have been working in appalling weather conditions.

The helicopter was brought in and has been using its infrared camera to scan an area around the River Stour.

Coastguard teams, the RNLI, Dorset Police and Dorset Fire and Rescue Service are involved.

Portland Coastguard watch manager Jennet Chisholm said rescuers had been working in 'very challenging' conditions.

She said there had been no sign of the missing man.
