A WEYMOUTH teenager is hoping to help others on a trip to Africa to learn about nursing and midwifery.

Paige Sewell, 16, intends to cross Tanzania gaining experience in a wide range of different clinical environments next year and has until July to fundraise for her trip.

The former Wey Valley student is now studying biology, psychology, health and social care and travel and tourism at Budmouth College.

Paige, whose ambition is to study midwifery at university, said the Africa trip would give her valuable experience in the field of medicine and midwifery.

While there she will learn about obstetrics, gynaecology, paediatrics, birthing complications and emergency medical care for situations like road traffic accidents.

Paige decided she wanted to be a midwife after she was the birthing partner for her mum, who gave birth to Paige’s brother Keegan in January 2012.

Paige said: “It was quite scary but a really good experience and I decided from then on I wanted to be a midwife.”

She added that it had been ‘amazing’ to meet her little brother for the first time.

Friends and supporters, including her sister Shai-Ann, also took part in the Christmas Day cross-harbour swim to raise funds.

Paige has already raised £1,500 towards the cost of the trip.

Paige said the trip to Tanzania would help her gain invaluable experience.
