TWO new bylaws have been introduced to protect sensitive reef and seagrass features in the coastal waters of Dorset.
The bylaws, made by the Southern Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authority (IFCA) aim to protect the important habitats of seagrass and rocky reef habitats in marine protected areas. They cover 25 per cent of coastal waters and 670km2 of seabed.
‘Bottom Towed Fishing Gear’ manages trawling and dredging, and the ‘Prohibition of Gathering in Seagrass Beds’ bylaw applies to bait collectors and hand gatherers working in seagrass beds.
