AN ELDERLY woman who had fallen and suffered a head injury in West Bay and a drifting kayak near Lyme Regis caused alert for coastguards yesterday.
At 1.49pm, West Bay coastguard rescue officers visited the promenade at West Bay after hearing a report that a 98-year-old woman had fallen and suffered a head injury.
Coastguards assisted the South West Ambulance Service and on arrival at the scene, coastguards waited with a paramedic until the ambulance took the woman to hospital.
Earlier on that day, Portland coastguard received a 999 call from a member of the public reporting a drifting and unmanned kayak off East Beach in Lyme Regis.
Lyme coastguard officers attended the scene shortly before 10am and the Lyme Regis RNLI Inshore Lifeboat was also launched to investigate.
After coastguards had arrived on scene, a nearby man identified himself as the owner of the kayak, which was actually a surf-ski, and explained that he had capsized and then swum ashore.
