CHAIRMAN of West Dorset District Council says she hopes people feel ‘more comfortable’ after a much publicised graffiti design in Dorchester was altered by the artist.

The work under the Damers Road railway bridge has attracted much attention after it drew a complaint for depicting a gun and Dorchester town councillors voiced their concerns.

The work has now been altered, with the gun painted a baby blue and bubbles can now be seen coming out the end.

Coun Gillian Summers invited the complainant to her latest meeting meeting to discuss her ‘good graffiti’ project, which also has schemes in Bridport and Sherborne.

She said: “A social media webpage has since been opened by a Dorchester resident asking for support to keep the artwork under the bridge, and over 2,700 people joined. “The subject was thoroughly aired on the site and there was an overwhelming number in support.

“It was therefore my intention to recommend that the artwork should remain, however in the meantime the artist, Peter Sheridan altered his work. “Although I did not feel that any alterations were necessary I hope the changes made will make some local people feel more comfortable with the image.”

Coun Summers is now busy planning an awards ceremony for the good graffiti project, which will be held at South Walks House in Dorchester from 6pm on Thursday, April 3.

There will be a presentation showing the development of the project over the six months and certificates will be awarded.

Coun Summers said: “I am delighted with the amount of interest shown by local people in all three towns and look forward to carrying this project forward in the future.”
