WILD weather is set to continue today with an amber warning for wind in place.

The Met Office is urging residents to ‘be prepared’ as gusts of up to 69mph are expected to hit Portland this afternoon.

A spokesman said: “The public should be prepared for the risk of disruption to transport and possibly also power supplies. “In addition, large waves are likely to affect some coasts.”

The warning will be in place from 10am until midnight, replaced by a yellow warning for Thursday.

A yellow warning for rain has also been issued for tomorrow and from 3pm on Friday until noon on Saturday, bringing the risk of further flooding.

And Dorset could be battered by more gale force winds and heavy rain across the next two weeks.

Portland Coastguards at the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre in Weymouth disseminate weather warnings and flood alerts to those along the coast.

They said there is a trend for periods of heavy rain and strong winds followed by a day or two of better weather, before the bad weather moves in again. This could continue for the next few weeks.

A spokesman for the coastguard said: “The further you go forward in time the less accurate the predictions become. Certainly what's out there at the moment heading towards us isn't brilliant.”

Coastguards are warning people to stay away from cliff edges due to the increased risk of cliff falls.
