FLAGS will be flown at council buildings in Weymouth and Dorchester to mark Commonwealth Day.

The effort supports a national day of flag raising to celebrate the Commonwealth.

Weymouth and Portland Borough Council and West Dorset District Council will join 500 local authorities and civic dignitaries, community groups and charities throughout the British Isles and Channel Islands in a flag raising event and ceremony of dedication to mark the occasion.

Both councils will be conducting flag raising ceremonies at 10am on Monday, March 10 at their respective offices.

The borough council’s flag raising ceremony will take place at the North Quay offices flagpole hosted by the Mayor of Weymouth and Portland Ray Banham. The district council’s flagraising ceremony will take place at the front of South Walks House hosted by West Dorset District Council Chairman Gillian Summers.

Cllr Banham said: “We are delighted to have the opportunity to join the British Isles and Channel Islands in hosting a public flag raising event to recognise Commonwealth Day.”
