A COUNCIL has demonstrated its commitment to energy saving and climate change by signing the Climate Local Commitment.

It is a Local Government Association initiative to drive, inspire and support council action on climate change.

Launched in June 2012, it supports councils in their bids to reduce carbon emissions and increase resilience to climate change.

Over the past five years, North Dorset District Council has reduced energy costs at its Blandford offices by 27 per cent, achieved the Carbon Trust Standard for its office site and introduced comprehensive internal recycling among other measures. Cllr Michael Roake, portfolio holder responsible for the Environment at NDDC, said: “Extensive work by the council has delivered real financial, environmental and reputational benefits.

“Signing the Climate Local Commitment demonstrates the council’s dedication to fulfilling the requirements of the 2008 Climate Change Act as well as securing our commitment to local agreements such as the Dorset Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Strategies.”
