A THREE year review will decide which council services could be scrapped to save money.

People will be asked to share their views as part of the review.

Council chiefs at West Dorset District Council and Weymouth and Portland Borough Council have agreed to carry out the review to find ways to make 'considerable' savings on top of already saving £3 million by sharing services.

Councillors will seek the views of local people, businesses and other key groups about the future role of the district and borough council.

The review will be known as '2020 Vision - Your Future Council'.

Between 2010/11 and 2015/16, the district council's government grant will reduce by £4 million, while the borough council will see a shortfall or £2.9 million in government funding.

West Dorset District Council Leader Robert Gould said: “Our two authorities are taking a proactive approach and tackling this in a managed way.

"The service reviews will help ensure the councils are able to provide appropriate and affordable services which best meet the future needs of local residents and businesses.”

Cllr Mike Goodman, the borough council's corporate affairs and continuous improvement spokesman, said the three year review will be in-depth and will cover services the council has to provide and those it chooses to provide.

He added: “There will be difficult decisions – some services will stop, others will have to be delivered in significantly different ways.

"The views of the public and other important groups will be critical to getting this right.”

The first reviews will begin in April 2014 with decisions on any changes to services made by each council in the usual way. They will include extensive public consultation.
