VISITORS to Town Bridge in Weymouth will get a Valentine’s Day surprise today.

The bridge has been strewn with knitted flowers which passers-by are invited to take home and give to their loved ones.

The stunt was organised by craft group Let’s Make It, who ventured out last night under cover of darkness to put the flowers in place.

Group leader Julie Hursthouse, community organiser for Weymouth and Portland Borough Council, said she hoped the flowers will ‘bring a smile to people’s faces’.

She said: “There has been a lot of doom and gloom about recently with all this weather and we had quite a few flowers left over from another project, so it seemed like a good idea to decorate such a well known part of town and share a bit of love.

“We just want people to help themselves, take the flowers and give them to their loved ones, or put on their dog. It’s just a bit of fun.”

The group’s antics have drawn attention in the past, with their float entries in Weymouth Carnival.

They are also the craftspeople behind the driftwood boats that were on display outside the Pavilion during the Olympics.

Julie said: “It’s a good group and we enjoy trying our hands at anything that’s a bit creative.

“People enjoy it and it’s a new way of meeting people across the community and from different generations.”
