UPDATED: Town council meets precept deadline

Dorset Echo: DEADLINE: Portland Town Council DEADLINE: Portland Town Council

PORTLAND Town Council has met the deadline for notifiying the borough council of its new precept charge.

The town council has to officially inform Weymouth and Portland Borough Council of decisions made about the precept and there was surprise that this was not done immediately.

At a meeting last Tuesday, councillors scrapped a controversial decision to increase the precept by 1,000 per cent amid an island revolt and voted on a new figure of 1.99 per cent.

The decision was greeted as a 'victory for the people.'

Town clerk Ian Looker said he had informed the borough council by telephone but some documents were required which he was arranging to be sent this morning.

Mr Looker, who works part-time, said he had other priority work to complete last week including putting together agendas for two council meetings tonight and tomorrow. The meetings have been arranged to conclude outstanding council business which was not completed at last Tuesday’s council meeting. Extra items for discussion have also been added.

Tonight’s meeting, which is open to the public, will take place at Easton Methodist church hall at 7pm.

Mayor of Portland Les Ames said the borough required accurate details of the changes which had taken place on the island regarding the precept and this had to be done in a particular way.

Councillor Ray Nowak said earlier he was ‘gobsmacked’ the town council hadn’t formally notified the borough as the deadline loomed.

A spokesman for the borough council said the authority had now been officially informed the precept had changed to 1.99 per cent.

The spokesman said the deadline for notifying the borough council was the end of today.

If the new precept is not in by the deadline. The precept set for a 1000% increase will stand as being passed.

If Mr Looker is finding meeting difficulties meeting deadlines then maybe time to hand over to someone who can. Weak excuse, if he cannot prioritise then move on!

How much longer must we endure this pathic bunch, who's ineptitude just knows no bounds.First out the door should be the highly paid clerk, who clearly has too much more important things to do, than attend to the matters that mean so much to the Taxpayers.
Followed closely by the co-opted councillors who have no real mandate to be there. And bringing up the rear the elected members who have a shred of self-respect left
At the last election, not one candidate knocked on my door and awaited a response. To a man/woman, they stuffed a leaflet through the letterbox, and scuttled off, before they could be asked any questions.
I did manage to speak with Mr Ames, whom I met "in the street".He was courteouse and engaging as ever, apologising for not being as active as in the past.
Sad as may seem to others, my opinion is now to support, the above "posters", who have called for a unilateral authority for the county.

To reflect this I have ticked the thumbs up box of Dorset Boys' post, and urge like minded people to do the same. Then we can see just how many there are out there who really want to get rid of this toothless, expensive group.

The town clerk said"...he had other priority work to complete last week including putting together agendas for two council meetings tonight and tomorrow."

I am gobsmacked. Stopping a 1000% rise in the precept should have been his first priority. Agendas for a useless talk shop aren't worth the paper they're written on. Time to scrap this and all the other incompetent tiers of local government in Dorset. One local authority will suffice.

I have said several times that I see no need for three layers of local government. But don't think that a county council unitary authority would take on all important services. That isn't what is happing elsewhere in the country, where the unitary county councils are shedding as muchness as possible to the equivalents of PTC. In the unitary county council model it is the likes of Weymouth and Portland BC that cease to exist.
