Minette Walters said it was a pleasure to be at the launch event and to unveil the commemorative plaque.

She added: “I expect that this fantastic library will still be going in 100 years time, still providing the people of Dorchester with literature and information.”

HM Lord-Lieutenant of Dorset Angus Campbell, mayor of Dorchester Stella Jones and Peter Finney, Dorset County Council’s cabinet member for community service, were among those present at the opening.

The new library, which is attached to the West Dorset District Council offices, was described as a ‘fantastic asset’ for the county town by the mayor.

Cllr Jones added: “The new library encourages people to come in and try the activities here and the location is well placed within the town centre.

“The new look, brightness, convenience and facilities of the library are brilliant.”

DCC Chairman John Wilson said that the library has been open since July but that this event marked the official opening.

He added: “The library has marvellous new facilities such as free internet wi-fi, and is 50 per cent bigger than the former library based opposite county hall.

“It can be used by the community and school classes as it has three large classrooms and an internet spot to attract the younger members of the community.

“This facility marks the county’s first new library in over a decade.”

HM Lord-Lieutenant of Dorset, Mr Campbell, said: “The library and learning centre is a wonderful facility and I am pleased to be here to mark the opening.

“The library is a real gem for the people of Dorchester and the surrounding areas.”
