MOTORISTS are facing major delays this evening after the A35 between Dorchester and Bridport was closed for emergency pothole repairs.

With the usual diversionary route of the B3157 Weymouth to Bridport coast road also closed for a major water work scheme at Abbotsbury, it is presenting a problem for drivers.

It is understood the A35 closure was lifted temporarily after the driver of a Bridport-bound bus complained to workmen and said his company hadn't been informed of the closure.

A spokesman for the Highways Agency said the work at Winterbourne Abbas was necessary and had to be carried out at short notice following an inspection.

He said the diversion from Dorchester is the A37, the A356 and the A3066.

Dorset Police said they had been advised of a closure from 7pm-midnight between Monkey's Jump roundabout and Bridport.

The Highways Agency spokesman said work could actually be finished by 9.30pm but it depends on weather conditions.

The Weymouth to Bridport coast road is due to reopen tomorrow, a month ahead of schedule.
