RAIL volunteers are disheartened after vandals tore up a flower display.

The Friends of Upwey Station are a band of locals who look after the unmanned South West Trains’ station, which is served by both Bristol and London trains.

The group’s efforts over the last few years have led to a reduction in crime and vandalism.

Terry Putnam from the group said he was ‘extremely disappointed’ to discover that daffodils near the main entrance to the station which had been planted by members had been destroyed.

The flowers were stamped on and ripped up sometime overnight on March 3.

Mr Putnam said: “It’s sad because they were a nice welcome to the station. They are bulbs and the daffodils will grow back next year.

“The flower boxes on the platform haven’t been touched. This may be because they are in full view of the CCTV cameras.

“I have contacted the station manager at Weymouth to see if the CCTV footage can be examined and the culprits identified.”
