HUNDREDS of Rainbows, Brownies, Guides, Senior Section and their leaders present and past from across Weymouth and Portland gathered at Weymouth Pavilion to celebrate Girlguiding’s 2014 World Thinking Day and the centenary of the formation of the Brownies.
More than 250 girls, plus their leaders and several members of the Trefoil Guild, elderly or retired members of Girlguiding, attended the celebration for an afternoon of crafts and fun organised by leaders of Weymouth North Division, which includes Radipole, Upwey and Broadwey, Littlemoor and Preston.
They were joined by Dorset Girlguiding county commissioner Dr Catherine Welch who spoke about the ‘global family’ of Guides and took the salute when each group of girls reaffirmed their promise.
They took part in a selection of activities, including weaving floral headbands and creating card rosebuds to remember the original name given to the Brownies when they were formed by Lord and Lady Baden-Powell in 1914.
The highlight of the afternoon was a fashion show charting the history of the Brownies and the development of their uniforms from over the past 100 years.
The dresses were modelled by four members of the 2nd Preston Brownie pack.
The afternoon also helped raise money for charity and this year it was decided to support Waves, the Weymouth centre offering help and guidance to young people under the age of 20.
