A FLASHMOB in a Weymouth superstore may not be considered the most traditional method of fundraising.
But staff at Sainsbury’s, based on Mercery Road, will take to the shop floor to recreate their best dance moves while fundraising for Sport Relief.
The flashmob, performing to Superman by Black Lace, will be just one of the ways the store will raise money in a fun-filled day on March 21.
A flashmob is a group of people who assemble suddenly in a public place, perform a specific act for a brief time and then quickly separate, often for entertainment or humour.
Emma Whitbread, PR ambassador for the Weymouth Sainsbury’s store, said: “We’ve planned a flashmob with 30 members of staff because we wanted to do something a little different this year.
“Every Sainsbury’s store will perform the flashmob routine on the same day at the same time.
“It will be a great way to surprise and entertain our customers, have fun and help raise vital funds for this great charity.
“The money we raise for sport relief makes a big difference to some of the poorest and most disadvantaged people in the UK and across the world, so we want to make this our best year ever.”
Sport Relief is one weekend, every two years, when the British public can get active, have fun and raise cash to help people living incredibly tough lives both in the UK and around the world.
The store will also be holding other events including an all-day cycle fundraiser on two bikes lent for free from the New Body Fitness gym on the Granby Industrial Estate.
Staff will cycle from 8am to 7pm and will also be having a sports themed non uniform day.
Manager Steve Jones said: “The event will be a fun-filled day in aid of a good cause.
“If customers want to join in with the cycle they are more than welcome and there will be Sport Relief donation boxes in store.”
Kate Jones, Sport Relief media manager, said: “Sainsbury’s is a long-standing partner of Sport Relief and colleagues get up to all sorts of imaginative activities like this one here in Weymouth.
We are hugely grateful for all their efforts, and wish the Weymouth store every success with their event.
“The money they raise will make a huge difference to people living incredibly tough lives in Dorset, across the UK and around the world.”
The first ever Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Games will take place from Friday, March 21 to Sunday, March 23.
