THE Overture for Shaftesbury Orchestra’s Spring Concert is Mozart’s Idomeneo, followed by Schumann’s Cello Concerto.
After a break for refreshments comes Beethoven’s Symphony No 2.
The soloist for the Schumann is Benjamin Birtle, a versatile professional British cellist who plays a 1690 Giovanni Grancino cello and has given recitals in the UK and US, Canada, Italy, Switzerland, Spain and Singapore.
Memorably he performed the Walton cello concerto in the presence of Lady Walton and followed this up with a repeat performance at the Bridgewater Hall with the Halle Orchestra. He is passionate about teaching and has given private lessons for nearly 20 years.
He currently teaches at Moyles Court School in Ringwood and gives private lessons in and around Hampshire and Dorset. The orchestra will be led by Norman Savage and conducted by Andrew Cowen.
Admission is free with a retiring collection for Julia’s House.
The concert starts at 7.30 pm on March 30 at Centenary Hall, Port Regis School, Motcombe.
