CHANGES are due to be made soon to Weymouth’s under-fire transport system.

An announcement is expected soon from Dorset County Council on details of the changes, which came about after discussions with local campaigners.

Traffic lights replaced main roundabouts during 2010-11 for the Weymouth Transport Package as DCC looked to improve traffic flows in the run-up to the Olympics.

But there has been criticism of increased congestion and problem junctions.

Residents Ken Whatley and Dave Burchill took concerns to County Hall last year, complaining that aspects of the Weymouth Transport Package needed examining.

Their concerns included the ‘dangerous’ Asda junction, gridlock on the Esplanade, unclear lane signage, queues on Boot Hill and a clogged up King Street-Queen Street junction.

Chief executive of Dorset County Council Debbie Ward acknowledged there were clear safety concerns and agreed to review the issues.

It was announced in December that the council would act on changes.

DCC said the transport package had resolved some issues including traffic congestion around Jubilee retail park. It has also decreased the travel time from Weymouth to Dorchester and manages the majority of through traffic around the town.

A road safety audit is planned for July this year and traffic management continues to be monitored to ensure the system efficiently manages traffic flow.
