DANCING, cycling and climbing mountains - people across the county are getting active to raise funds for Sport Relief.

A number of events are taking place in Dorset this weekend to help raise money for those in need including a flash mob at Sainsbury's in Weymouth.

You can see a video of the flashmob below:

Yesterday, youngsters at a Dorchester school also took on Mount Kenya for Sport Relief.

Staff and pupils at Frome Valley CE VA First School reached the summit by stepping up and down on wooden PE benches.

Each child in reception and Key Stage 1 climbed 42 steps and each child in Key Stage 2 took on 87 steps.

Mount Kenya is 5,199m high and is close to Frome Valley’s Kenyan link school, The Wise Shepherd Academy.

Organiser and teacher Celestria Duerdoth said: “There are around 215 million children around the world who have to work to survive and by raising money for Sport Relief, we can help working children get a good education and break the cycle of poverty.”

Nine-year-old Lily said: “It was so much fun. I loved watching the other classes doing their steps.”

Her classmate Matthew added: “We have raised lots of money for Sport Relief.”

Staff thanked Meyers Estate Agents who donated £100 for the children at Frome Valley, who all received a Fairtrade cereal bar after climbing the mountain and £100 for school equipment at the link school in Kenya.

Meanwhile, shoppers got more than they bargained for as a flash mob descended on Sainsbury’s Weymouth.

Staff also held an all-day cycle fundraiser to raise even more money for the worthy cause.

Deputy manager Brendan Moran said: “We are hoping to have raised £3,000 overall.

“And we’ve sold £2,000 worth of the Sport Relief merchandise. Customers have been very generous.

“The flash mob was lots of fun – we had about 30 colleagues taking part and the customers really enjoyed it.”

Sport Relief takes place once every two years and encourages the British public to get active to raise money for needy people both in the UK and across the world.

It is part of Comic Relief, which has helped to fund more than 17,000 charity projects since it began in 1985.
