RUNNERS are getting ready to roar into action for the 32nd Dorchester and District Lions Club Fun Run.

The popular event is being held on Sunday, March 30 and will see hundreds of runners – many in fancy dress – hitting the streets of the county town in the name of charity.

The event starts from the Dorchester Middle School and those taking part will have a choice of a 10km timed run or a safe, flat 2km route.

More than 300 runners took part in the event last year and organisers are hoping to see an increase in numbers this time round.

Registration is from 9am in the school sports hall, where there will be teas and coffees available.

The 10km runners will head off at 10.25am with the 2km starting five minutes later.

People are encouraged to run, trot, walk or be pushed around the shorter route and there will be a completion from 10am to judge the best fancy dress.

Lions Club president Andy Rose said: “We’re holding the run on Mother’s Day this year so we’re hoping that the whole family can attend, have fun together and raise money for their favourite charity.

“The club never ceases to be surprised by the enthusiastic participation and generosity of the local community – that’s why we love putting on the event.”

Over the years the Fun Run has raised more than £200,000 for local good causes and charities and this year the Lions have nominated Age UK and the Alzheimer’s Society as their main beneficiaries.

Half of the money people raise through sponsorship will go to the charity of their choice with the other 50 per cent going to Lions Club charities.

Among those planning to be present on the day are Mayor of Dorchester Stella Jones, as the club continues to support her fundraising activities for Autism Wessex, and Dorchester’s ‘Flying Nun’ Sister Augustine who will be travelling from Falmouth for her 30th Fun Run. Mr Rose said he wanted to thank all the local businesses that have supported the event through sponsorship.

Runners can sign up to take part on the day and entry forms are also available from Goulds household store in South Street, the Dorchester tourist information centre in Antelope Walk or the Dorchester Sports Centre.
