THE countdown is on for a new street festival that will give the spring bank holiday a boost in Weymouth.

Details of Fayre in the Square were first announced at the beginning of the year by Weymouth Rotary Club.

Since then it’s been all systems go and the community has thrown its weight behind the charity-supporting event.

Waterside Holiday Park & Spa has been announced as the main sponsor.

Live music including harmony group The Decadettes, street entertainment, buskers, dancers, a battle re-enactment, food and crafts stalls and prizes galore – all this and more is promised in a two-day free family fayre.

Fayre in the Square is centred around Hope Square and along Trinity Road and will be held on Sunday, May 25 and Bank Holiday Monday, May 26 from 10am-6pm. It is the same weekend as the Quayside Music Festival held on the other side of the bridge.

Bands, including Under the Carousel, Replay and Silhouettes, will perform on a stage in Hope Square while stalls will line the road towards the Town Bridge.

Co-organiser Dennis Corbett said it was ‘scary’ to think the event is less than 10 weeks away.

He said thousands of leaflets were about to be printed followed by scores of programmes which will be distributed free of charge.

Mr Corbett, pictured, said: “The bands and stage entertainment are booked. Street events are just about organised, and the various stalls have been booked to give a varied array of options.

“The Echo have been incredibly supportive which helps to maintain excellent local interest.”

He added: “Our event sponsor is Waterside which has been incredibly generous. With their help we have been able to ensure that the event will be a success, and has given all of us the enthusiasm to push on and make the event something really special.

“We have a number of additional sponsors, providing cash and prizes to support the stage building process and the draw.

“We are developing our 50 Club with local businesses donating £50 to support the event. All help is very much appreciated, and we are looking forward to a really fabulous event.”

  •  Fayre in the Square aims to provide a community event for locals and visitors, with the emphasis on family entertainment.

It will also give a boost to local businesses. Raising money for local charities, it is hoped it will become an annual attraction. For information call 01305 761828 or search for the event on Facebook.
