Bart Angus-Hughes, a resident of nearby Purbeck Road, said: “I was painting one of the flats opposite, when I heard the sirens and saw two ambulances turn up.
"I saw the ambulance man running into the building and he was just dashing about. I knew then that it was serious. Then I saw several police arrive.
“I must say that I was surprised that they had cordoned off so much of the road.”
Huw George, Manager of the Croydon Hotel, said: “I was up at the crack of dawn this morning and I heard nothing. I am not a great sleeper, so if there had been a noise in the night, I would have heard it.”
Our reporter Jim Durkin has spoken to Poole Hill Neighbourhood Watch coordinator Norman Decent.
He said: “The area has had its problems but it has been getting better.
“It always seems to get more livelier on the weekends, with a lot of stag and hen parties.
“There are problems here, like you get in many other areas. drug problems
Sally has sent us some more video from the scene:
The St Michael’s Road area is popular with tourists, especially weekend visitors, as there is a large number of hotels, hostels and guest houses in the vicinity.
One local resident, who didn’t want to be named, said: “I’m pretty shocked there appears to have been a woman killed here. This area is quite vibrant, with more than one or two characters usually knocking about, but it’s rare to hear of violence of this nature.
“Obviously, my thoughts are with the victim’s family. Someone, somewhere will soon be getting just about the worst possible news they’re ever going to get.”
The resident said he saw a man being escorted away in handcuffs.
Caitlin at the scene has been speaking to locals.
One resident, who asked not be named, said: "I saw the paramedics rushing in and out of the flats (number 52 St Michael's Road).
"It appears that they were trying to save somebody, to keep them alive."
He said that went on for about 15 minutes and there was "a sense of urgency".
Two ambulances, a paramedics' car and around 12 police vehicles all arrived at the same time.
