PUPILS at a Dorchester school will soon be able to enjoy a new outdoor learning space.

Funds have been donated to Damers First School by the Dorset Gardens Trust and the PTA to begin building work on the proposed gardening area.

Rosemary Agg, of Dorset Garden Trust, presented a cheque for £400 and pots of sunflower seeds to the school during a morning assembly.

Deputy headteacher Moira Bearwish said: “The plans are to build a garden area on the field and this is now possible thanks to funding from the Dorset Garden Trust and the PTA.”

It is hoped that work will soon begin and include practical opportunities for learning across a range of areas such as literacy, science, maths and creative subjects.

It will include raised plant beds, a sensory area, a plastic bottle greenhouse, a role play area, a creative practical area, a science area, a weather station and a mud kitchen.

Ms Agg added: “The money has been donated by us thanks to Battens Solicitors – as a local trust we awarded the funds to Damers First School.”

Dorset Gardens Trust is a conservation charity working to protect the county’s many historic parks and gardens for future generations.

The trust will celebrate its 25th anniversary on Sunday, June 29 at Herringston House from 10am to 5pm. The event, named The Garden Day, will include specialist nurseries and garden related stalls as well as delicious lunches and teas.
