Free overnight parking for all in Weymouth.

At the beginning of April Weymouth and Portland Borough Council launched a shake-up in parking in the borough and now all residents and visitors to Weymouth will be able to park overnight for free permanently.

From 6pm to 9.30am every day people will be able to park in borough council run car parks for free, although normal fees will apply at all other times.

Also normal pay and display charges will be cheaper.

But, the concession will not apply to on-street pay and display parking, where normal charges will apply at all times and car parks at Castletown, Chesil and Portland Bill, which are operated but not owned by the borough council, are not included in the changes.

Christine James, borough spokesman for transport and infrastructure said: “We are pleased to be able to offer cheaper parking charges in borough council-run car parks and also make free overnight parking permanent as part of a revolutionary parking review.

“We have been working hard for some years to come up with a parking scheme that suits all and will keep working on the review to make the service the best it can be for people.”

She added: “I hope residents, local businesses and visitors take full advantage of these positive changes to parking in the borough.

“We have introduced these changes to encourage people to park in the town centre and increase footfall both in the day and in the evening.

“The council tries to lower prices where we can during these difficult economic times.”
