JILL Crocker sent us the lovely postcard, above, of Weymouth’s Greenhill Gardens. It pre-dates the First World War and the reverse side is filled with rather poignant writing that is still just about decipherable.

It reads: “My dearest Lucy, Just a line to let you know that I am still alive yet.

“But I have to go to Verne (?) today dearest, so if I am not in by 6.30pm tomorrow night Tuesday I will not be to see you until Friday night, but I will do my best to be in to see you Tuesday night if I can.

“It’s just my luck again. The old doctor said it would (be) better for me down there than here so he said I had to go, but I don’t want…”

Always, George.”
