A ROYAL NAVY veteran attempting to break a kayaking distance record will take a brief rest in Weymouth today.

Richard Hunt, 43, will take respite aboard Weymouth’s Tall Ship Pelican.

He is trying to break the solo kayaking distance record of 2,300 miles.

Mr Hunt hopes to smash this record by about 200 miles whilst raising funds and awareness for Blesma – The Limbless Veterans Charity.

Mr Hunt had his left leg amputated above the knee after 20 unsuccessful operations following an accident while playing rugby.

His challenge started at 5am on Saturday in Gosport. It’s expected his journey will take around 100 days of paddling plus rest days.

Lou Keeling, marketing manager for Adventure Under Sail, said: “It is a real pleasure to be able to help Richard and his support crew and we look forward to meeting them.”
