RNLI to discuss environmentalists' balloon race fears

THE RNLI says it has listened to concerns about a charity balloon release planned for Weymouth and will speak to organisers of the event.

Environmental campaigners raised concerns over the detrimental impact of a planned balloon release on May 5 that would raise funds for the Weymouth RNLI.

The lifeboat organisation insists it takes ‘environmental issues very seriously’ and is now trying to work with the organisers of the balloon release to look for the ‘best way forward’.

A spokesman for the RNLI said: “The balloon race, scheduled for May 5, is raising funds in aid of the RNLI but has not been organised by the RNLI.

“We are grateful to anyone who wishes to organise an event to raise funds for the RNLI but we take environmental issues very seriously.

“We are speaking with the event organisers about the best way forward but it is difficult to consult all of those involved with the organisation of the race because of the Easter break.

“We appreciate the patience of those who have raised their concerns.”
