CIVIC leaders in Weymouth have sent a message of congratulations across the Channel to the newly elected mayor in Weymouth and Portland’s twin town of Louviers.
Francois-Xavier Priollaud, 38, was elected by the Municipal Council as the first citizen of the Normandy market town following elections that saw the right wing alliance taking 25 of the 33 council seats.
He succeeds 58-year-old Franck Martin, who wore the tricolour mayoral sash for 19 years and visited Weymouth a number of times.
Mayor of Weymouth and Portland Ray Banham sent his congratulations to Francois-Xavier Priollaud on his election.
Cllr Banham expressed the hope that M. Priollaud would head the delegation that arrives in Weymouth on June 6, but it now seems he is unable to join the party.
One of the nine deputy and assistant mayors is expected to travel to Weymouth.
Mayor-elect Kate Wheller will welcome the visitors at a special D-Day anniversary evening planned for the Pavilion Ocean Room.
Cllr Banham said: “The twinning is excellent at creating good relationships.
“The friendship with Louviers has been successful for over 50 years.”
