Sleep wild and help raise vital funds for the RSPB

NATURE lovers have been invited to camp out under the stars at Arne’s RSPB Nature Reserve this summer.
Two events, part of the RSPB’s second Big Wild Sleepout fundraiser, are set for the Dorset reserve – the first includes building your own shelter, the second, pitching your own tent.
The charity has also produced a free fundraising pack full of everything you need to host a successful sponsored sleepout in your own back garden – for those who would rather opt for somewhere closer to home.
Dorset RSPB visitor officer Rob Farrington explained: “This year at Arne we are giving the public two opportunities to stay all night at one of the RSPB’s most wonderful nature reserves.
“Jutting out into Poole Harbour, Arne is jam-packed full of wildlife and the scenery is breathtaking.”
In June’s ‘Gimmie Shelter’ initiative, those taking part can build their own shelters on the reserve, enjoy locally-sourced food and head out onto the reserve at nightfall, said Rob.
He added: “In August bring your tent and spend the night in a private area of the reserve overlooking the harbour. All profits go to the RSPB.”
The nationwide Big Wild Sleepout takes place from June 16 to 22.
Tony Whitehead, of the RSPB south west, said: “Most people who take part will probably help give nature a home throughout the year by providing food, water and shelter.
“The Big Wild Sleepout is a chance to take part in the RSPB’s biggest fundraising event to help give nature a home. Join family or friends for a sponsored sleepout in your back garden or at an organised event.”
Gimmie Shelter, costing up to £35, takes place on June 21, from 3pm. Arne’s ‘In Tents’ sleep out, costing up to £25, takes place from 5pm, August 8. Visit rspb.org.uk/sleepout for details.
